Every map should communicate vital information, be accurate and easy to read, and draw the viewer beyond two dimensions into a special world. In addition to achieving these ideals, an important requirement for recreation maps is fitness for use. They must be durable, accurate, comprehensive, reliable, and easy to carry. They must also be able to show the lay of the land while providing essential information to enable outdoor enthusiasts to plan their trips and navigate the trails, waterways, and wilderness in the park. The five-map National Geographic Trails Illustrated Adirondack Series, released in May 2004, covers the entire six-million-acre expanse of Adirondack Park (about 20 percent of the total land area for the state of New York). Each two-sided 1:75,000-scale map is printed on durable, paperlike plastic and is waterproof, tear-resistant, and easily carried as gear for any backcountry adventure. The map series was designed and developed in collaboration with the Adirondack Mountain Club and local land management agencies to ensure that the information is accurate, up to date, and supports best land-use strategies and practices in the park. |
