Universal Map's unique Michigan Regional Map Series provides an unusual level of detail including hundreds of Michigan's small cities and villages not included on state-level maps. In addition, extensive points of interest, such as state and federal lands, boat launches, skiing areas, and snowmobile trailheads, make it a favorite of recreational and business travelers alike.

A new set of cartographic specifications was developed to complement the scale, level of detail, and recreational feel of the Michigan Regional maps. These specifications were applied to the researched data in Maplex, which was used to create the numerous annotation features that make up the labels on the finished products. All edits and additions to the map were made in ArcGIS, and the final output is a geodatabase of Michigan. The indexes were created from the geodatabase using a customized index routine that references the spatial location of the annotation. Products can be extracted from the geodatabase using an enhanced graphics exporter.

Founded in 1976, Universal Map is a provider of maps and geographic information for the United States. In addition, it also publishes an extensive collection of business and educational resources.
