Traditionally, airport layout plan drawing sets are created and maintained in a CAD environment. While CAD is still a valuable planning tool, it does not possess the richness and flexibility that would be afforded the same data in a GIS. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, with the support of Hartsfield Planning Collaborative, has constructed a GIS Airport Layout Plan database and drawing set. The staff at the airport now has a valuable array of feature datasets that can be easily maintained and managed and efficiently accessed by multiple departments for decision making on countless airside and landside planning, maintenance, safety, and terminal retail projects. These maps are examples from the drawing set that include the Airport Layout Plan and one of the many Runway Approach Plan and Profile Sheets. The Airport Layout Plan is a graphic representation of existing and proposed facilities, pavement, navigational aids, terrain, and other features. The plan includes the location of these features within the airport and the required runway clearance and dimensional information required to show compliance with all applicable flight standards. The Plan and Profile Sheets are prepared to locate and document both existing and man-made structures, objects of natural growth, and terrain that represent obstructions to navigable airspace associated with this runway. The large-scale views of the inner portions of existing and proposed approach surfaces allow for the identification of obstructions within the protected areas off runway ends. |
