The Planimetric/Topographic 1"=100' and 1"=200' Map Series of Jefferson County, Kentucky, is fundamental to the widespread use of GIS within the Louisville and Jefferson County Information Consortium (LOJIC). The LOJIC partner agencies include the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District, the Louisville Metro Government, the Jefferson County Property Valuation Administrator, and the Louisville Water Company. In 1990, these map series represented the easiest and fastest way to see all basemap information such as building footprints, contours, roads, sidewalks, parking lots, railroad, and drainage. Their use dramatically changed the land development process and the community planning process in Jefferson County. The public could also easily view this information and retrieve copies quickly. The original series was in black and white and only building footprints used a shaded polygon symbol. The restructuring of the planimetric and topographic database in 2001 featured the additional polygonization of roads, parking lots, and tree masses. The enhanced database structure expanded the use of symbology in the map series. In addition, advancement in printing technology since 1990 enabled the use of color at an affordable cost. |
