In 2001–2003, the city of Torrance, California, worked with consultant DCSE, Inc., to update the water and sewer GIS. Both water and sewer GIS geodatabases were created as the data source for the atlas maps. During 2004, the city of Torrance produced the first edition of a water and sewer atlas map series using tools from Esri including ArcInfo and the Map Book Developer Sample that is available on the Esri Web site. Features included in the sewer map series include mains, manholes, house connections, and easements. Attributes associated with these features are displayed on the maps using feature-linked annotation to denote lateral pipe stationing, pipe diameter, material, and other sewer information. The advantage of feature-linked annotation is that it is dynamic—when the attribute changes in the feature geodatabase, the value in the annotation also changes on the map. Special symbols were created to draw the flow arrows in the middle of each pipe section. Similar techniques were used to create the water map series that shows pipes, hydrants, valves, house connections, and easements along with feature-linked annotation. |
