The Detailed Soil Survey Atlas map for Antelope County, Nebraska, has a scale of 1:50,000 and features nonirrigated soil ratings for plant growth model index values. To make this map, soil data was rated or evaluated from the surface horizon through the soil profile a depth of the first restrictive soil layer, such as bedrock, a dense layer, or a depth of 150 cm, to determine the root zone. The Soil Ratings for Plant Growth (SRPG) (nonirrigated) provides an index value that arrays soils logically in the landscape according to their inherent properties important to support plant growth such as soil climate, depth of root zone, and fertility. SRPG also considers the soil root zone available water capacity calculation to determine the inherent capacity of a soil to store and supply moisture to plants. The quantity of water held in the root zone and available for plant use directly influences productivity of the crop plant and yields. See the USDA Web site for more information on soils. |
