Originally, this map was created as an office display measuring 9 feet by 4 feet 6 inches. It was meant to serve as a backdrop for discussing operating issues and planning efforts. However, because of the length of the pipeline (682 right-of-way miles), it was difficult to show detail at valve locations and stations. This resulted in placing a schematic band at the bottom of the map. When the capabilities of ArcGIS 9 Desktop were realized, such as map rotation and the ability to easily add CAD data, it was much easier to create the map. Now the map shows the physical geographic extent of the pipeline as well as a system flow diagram that enables viewers to visualize the pipeline for operation and planning purposes.
