ArcGIS was used to create expected use models (EUMs) for the Ennis Gulch and Willow Creek pastures within the Bureau of Land ManagementChallis Field Office, Idaho. In this project, suitability parameters for distance to water and slope were based on assumptions and functions from Guenther, et al. (2000). The modeling extent was confined to pasture boundaries and the ability of livestock to move throughout an allotment. The effect of fence lines and natural barriers was considered. EUMs can facilitate efficient analyses and visual display of spatial relationships such as distance to water and topography. In addition, EUMs can assist land managers in identifying potential uses and land-use conflicts. For example, EUMs can be used to identify areas for monitoring sites, placing fences, recognizing problem areas, and refining grazing capacity estimates.
