Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, which is centered in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord Metropolitan Statistical Area, has seen an influx of Hispanic and/or Latino population since 1990. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population increased from 1.3 percent of the county’s total population to 6.5 percent in 2000. It was estimated that the Hispanic population increased to 8.1 percent in 2003. It is essential for the health care community to understand the composition of the Hispanic population to serve its needs better both culturally and medically.

This map illustrates the concentration of Hispanic population by place of origin in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, by census tract. In addition, the Hispanic population as a percentage of total population is represented at the census block level.
