The Land Utilization map, 2004 edition, was prepared and updated at 1:75,000 and 1:170,000 (shown) scales to show the broad land-use patterns in Hong Kong. Data for the developed area was derived using GIS techniques, and the data in the nonbuilt-up area was obtained by remote-sensing techniques. The hard-copy maps will be published every two to three years, but the GIS data will be updated annually. These maps provide useful information to support planning and development in Hong Kong and assist with other functions within the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) such as terrain risk assessments, greenhouse effect inventory updating, vegetation monitoring in parks, and updating sustainable indicators. Land-use information will be extracted and compiled for various international organizations and publications such as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Asia Yearbook. Additionally, the digital version is distributed through the Planning Department’s internal GIS portal, Geoinfo One-Stop, for other departments in HKSAR. |
