Building on previous work for three coal seams (Springfield, Herrin, and Danville/Baker Coals) and completed as part of the U.S. Geological Survey National Coal Resource Assessment, the Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky geological surveys have cooperatively mapped four additional seams at the basin scale for recent coal bed methane and carbon sequestration studies supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. The new mapping contributes to regional knowledge of these seams, and the data will be used to help assess areas within the Illinois Basin for enhanced coal bed methane development and carbon sequestration potential. The GIS datasets depicted here consist of extent, thickness, depth, and elevation layers and have been completed for seven coal seams. Additional GIS layers of coal quality parameters and mined areas were mapped and compiled for use in GIS-based volumetric calculations. Shapefiles of these datasets will be made available to industry and the public in the future. Copyright 2006, The Trustees of Indiana University, Indiana Geological Survey, all rights reserved.
