Nanjing is a historical city in northern China with a profound cultural and natural background. EDAW was commissioned to develop the Landscape Master Plan to integrate economic, social, environmental, and cultural concerns on the site.

The urban framework’s organization and land uses cater to future development. High technology and research and development facilities play a primary role in this development district. Retail, entertainment, and cultural urban cores are planned to create a synergy from which the city can develop. Both medium- and low-density housing schemes complete the nexus of land uses. The open space and water systems are paramount to the development of the new city and its urban framework.

The landscape concept weaves together a continuous series of waterfront development areas, which are categorized into four areas—Urban Green Cross, City Green Corridor, Central Park, and High Tech Eco Park. The concept of water and green open spaces as the focus for the city is part of a new way of thinking about urban lifestyle, a healthy living environment, and environmental awareness.

Using GIS technology, this map is based on a suitability analysis model that consists of several issue areas. Low, moderate, and high values are assigned within each issue area based on its suitability for development. A value of 1 is assigned to low, 2 to moderate, and 3 to high. A weighted overlay is applied to create a composite suitability map. Composite values are assigned by multiplying the value by weight, resulting in a range from 0 to 3.
