These maps show the shaking intensity of an inland earthquake capable of causing the severest damage if it strikes Kyoto City. They also show potential landslide areas as well as disaster-related facilities such as evacuation centers, hospitals, police stations, and fire stations. Kyoto City has 11 wards, and hazard maps for earthquake, flooding, and landslides were produced for each of them. The Multi-Hazard maps were published by the city in 2005 and were included with the monthly newsletter each ward publishes and distributes to all 650,000 households. Citizens can use them to learn about the nature of disasters and what to do in case of an emergency. The goal was to guide people to a safer land-use planning practice. |
