The Fairfax County, Virginia, wastewater collection system consists of more than 3,200 miles of sewer lines, approximately 92,000 manholes, 65 pumping stations, and other facilities. The collection system serves 85 percent of the 325,000 households and virtually all businesses within the county. This map shows the collection system for one of the two pump and haul systems in the county. A pump and haul system is a gravity collection system that terminates into a holding tank where the sewage is pumped and transported to a treatment plant for disposal. This system is typically used for communities that are remote from the main collection system.
