The City of Hampton, Virginia, created its Street Centerline Map, using ArcGIS 9.1 software, to be the basic large-scale city map used by staff and citizens alike. It features mainly hand-placed, feature-linked annotation layers created in the ArcSDE database. A visually pleasing color palette was chosen to refine the look of the map. One of the more helpful features of the map is the easy-to-read street index. The index corresponds to the municipal tax grid, which is the basis for 200 scale maps across the city. The index is alphabetized with major streets highlighted in red. Included on the map are the locations of offices and industrial parks, commercially zoned areas, parks and recreation areas, police and fire departments, schools, wetlands, libraries, subdivisions, and government facilities such as NASA, Langley Air Force Base, and Fort Monroe Army Station. An inset (not shown) of the downtown area provides the location of key city government offices and public parking areas. This map also serves as a template for large-scale maps in the city as extra layers are added or subtracted as needed. The maps are distributed to city departments and sold to citizens upon request at minimal charge.
