The Boone County Arboretum is a 120-acre facility located in rural Boone County, Kentucky. Open to the public, the facility is unique in integrating an arboretum with active recreation (baseball diamonds, soccer fields) and passive recreation (walking/jogging trails, wildlife observation areas). The arboretum consists of more than 1,300 individually identified trees, more than 200 managed plant beds, 8 featured points of interest, and an abundance of wooded and natural areas. Approximately 41,000 linear feet of underground irrigation lines and sprinklers help ensure that the arboretum’s valuable investments in trees and plants will continue to live, even during droughtlike conditions. Visitors, even those with no horticultural expertise, can use the map for self-guided tours of the arboretum at any time of the year. The arboretum map uses an internal grid system to easily identify the various specimens on site. These identification systems are cross-referenced on both sides of the map and allow users to identify a specimen based on its ID number, grid location, or common name. To better manage the constantly changing facility, the arboretum has implemented a combination of GIS and GPS technologies under the guidance of Boone County GIS. This allows the arboretum to continuously update its inventory of trees, shrubs, plant beds, trails, woods, and wetlands. Courtesy of Boone County Planning Commission. |
