Kitchener is a vibrant, confident, and cosmopolitan community with a population of 210,000 located in the heart of southwestern Ontario, Canada. The Kitchener 2006 Atlas Standard Edition displays information derived from the city’s Enterprise GIS (ArcSDE database) including cadastral lines, building footprints, road pavement, driveways, sidewalks, fire hydrants, surface water, and land-use classes. More than 93,000 addresses are labeled in the atlas including 8,500 horizontal units and 1,900 addresses on lots yet to be developed. All labeling for the map series is done dynamically using the Esri Maplex extension. As a result, no labels in the series had to be converted to annotation to facilitate the production of a cartographically pleasing product. The Kitchener 2006 Atlas Standard Edition is used primarily by city staff, both in the office and in the field, as a general quick reference and can be updated on demand in addition to the annual editions. The City of Kitchener makes copies of the atlas available for the public to purchase. The GIS team at Kitchener also has produced three similar series of atlases. These display specific spatial information designed to support its internal Emergency Operations Centre, its city-owned property registry, and its engineering and public works operations staff.
