The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service uses the Scenery Management System (SMS) as the framework for integrating scenery management data into all levels of forest planning. A major component of SMS is scenic integrity levels. Scenic integrity is used to describe an existing situation and to set the standards for management or desired future conditions (objectives). It is a measure of the degree to which a landscape is visually perceived to be "complete." The purpose of this analysis was to develop scenic integrity objectives for the Tongass National Forest, which will influence how the USDA conducts future activities with the potential to affect the scenic character of the landscape.
