Geologic mapping of the seafloor in a GIS environment is being used to characterize the surface and subsurface geologic framework of the central California coastal region. Digital elevation models (DEMs) at the highest possible resolution were developed as a base for geomorphic interpretation of geologic features. These DEMs are based on reprocessing the individual surveys that compose the National Geophysical Data Center/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NGDC/NOAA) Coastal Relief Model. A slope model of the offshore study region was produced from a composite of this data and other available bathymetric DEMs using ArcGIS 3D Analyst. A geomorphic seafloor classification map was developed based on the slope model, published maps, available single-channel seismic reflection, and multibeam bathymetric data. Eight geomorphic domains were classified showing differing geologic, structural, and topographic characteristics along the continental slope and shelf.
