This map is based on detailed studies performed during 1997–2001 by the Czech Geological Survey and Instituto Nicaragüense de Estudios Territoriales (INETER) of Managua, Nicaragua, under the supervision of the Czech Ministry of Environment. It illustrates the main geological and geomorphological complexes and features in the Pacific zone of Nicaragua.

Until recently, the only existing regional photogeological map was based on data collected in 1972. The current data is based on newly performed fieldwork and analytical results. Geological mapping was accompanied by the study of relief origin. The combination of both research methods was the basis for the compilation of the geological hazards assessment map.
