The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s flood hazard maps display flood risk. This information is used to support local floodplain management, permitting the setting of flood insurance purchase requirements and insurance ratings for the national Flood Insurance Program. The Flood Map Modernization program creates updated GIS flood maps such as the paper flood map of Riley County, Kansas, shown on the right, which is designed for consistent, cost-effective reproduction. To the flood map on the left, a user has added an aerial photo and customized the flood data to make the map easier for county planners to use. Communities might also add zoning data, drainage basins, parcel data, evacuation routes, critical facilities, or other data to help them manage their risk.
