The map on the left shows the distribution of employment in the Carson River Valley of Nevada. Each employer is represented with a dot whose size is proportional to the number of employees at that site. The number of employees was determined from federal employment records and augmented with surveys of the sites themselves. Government and school employment was further refined using state payroll information. The distribution of the employment centers and the number of employees, along with the distribution of residential dwelling units, are being used to update Traffic Analysis Zones (TAZs). Traffic Analysis Zones provide input to traffic models that will be used to identify problem areas and bottlenecks and to design solutions. The map on the right shows the distribution of housing in the Carson River Valley. Parcel data was acquired from the Douglas County and Carson City planning departments. Each parcel is represented with proportional-sized symbols showing the number of dwelling units on that parcel. Together with the Carson Valley Employment map, this map shows traffic planners specifically where the valley’s residents are going each morning. Traffic models take these inputs and calculate traffic volumes and identify traffic bottlenecks. Proposed developments are added to the map to show proposed housing and projected traffic patterns. Traffic planners can then use these maps to identify potential traffic problems and to design solutions. Courtesy of Parsons Corporation. |
