The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has published State Transportation maps for more than 40 years. In 2006–2007, the state agency for the first time used ArcGIS Desktop software to create this map instead of the CADD (computer-aided design and drafting) application used previously. Using a GIS for the source data provided greater spatial accuracy as well as more up-to-date highway geometries through connections to other NJDOT databases. Data in a variety of formats from other state departments of transportation was integrated seamlessly with a minimum of difficulty. Mapmakers spatially created features such as the index of towns and mileage chart with increased precision.
