The Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office is responsible for the geographic tracking of pesticide use by using geographic entities called ranches. The ranches, collected together as a dataset, are known as the ranch map. In 1999 and 2003, Monterey County produced paper atlases of the ranch map for use by staff and the public. Starting in 2005, the county was tasked with completely revising its ranch map GIS data and ultimately producing a new series of atlases. The goal was to build a set of atlases that were not only more functional and easier to use but also more accessible to staff and the public. The cartographic and labeling capabilities of ArcGIS were used to improve the graphic presentation, while DS Map Book was used to create and compile map grid and map pages. The atlas was made available over the Internet and on a browseable CD for easy access and distribution. Courtesy of Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office. |
