The Republic of India is the second-most populous nation in the world and represents a rich diversity of people, language, and socioeconomic factors. This huge country comprises 28 states with a population over 1.1 billion. With its vast population and rising standard of living, India faces great challenges in terms of both current and future energy production and distribution.

The Power Plants of India map from Platts depicts both current and future power generation projects across the seven centrally administered territories of India. Power plants with a generating capacity of 25 megawatts or greater have been sized by generation, colored by the plant’s primary fuel, and shaped by the current plant status (operating versus planned). The goal for this map was to present the information in such a way that the reader could decipher broad patterns in the Indian power generation industry while exploring detailed information about individual plants. This was accomplished by limiting the base-map data to major cities, province capitals, and province boundaries and by employing an appropriate map-scale as well as sound design principles.
