Catonsville, Maryland, which lies 15 minutes southwest of Baltimore, is a historic community whose development dates back to the 1700s and contains numerous recreation areas and public parks. Its proximity to Baltimore has caused the area to grow as city residents relocate to the suburbs.

This mapping project depicts socioeconomic data for the Catonsville Business District. Using ArcGIS, Community College of Baltimore County students digitized the city of Catonsville tax parcels from the county tax maps and joined data from publicly available sources (county tax and zoning records). The result was a thematic map illustrating the current picture of the economic health of the town. The students found that the business district was composed primarily of residential properties (houses and apartments) and was able to see the distribution of commericial properties.
