The 1:24,000 scale zoning map for the city of Fayetteville is a compilation of the city’s 1:2,400 official zoning maps and incorporates two overlay districts that are a part of the city’s zoning regulations. The zoning layer has gone through several changes over time, from pen and ink to CADD (computer-aided design and drafting) to ArcView shapefile format, and finally to its current form, an ArcGIS geodatabase.

Labeling zoning maps at 1:24,000 scale proved to be a challenge and—for the best possible results—the Maplex Label Engine was utilized. All plat pages and as many streets as possible were labeled dynamically. Also, redundant zoning district labels were used to help differentiate districts of similar color. The public can purchase hardcopy maps or access free copies via the city’s Internet map server with Adobe PDF formats available for downloading.
