Avalanche Mapping of Boulder, Colorado, created this map showing historically observed snow avalanches on U.S. Highway 550 and Cement Creek, Colorado. It was created from 10-meter digital elevation models for the hillshade under the mosaicked 1:24,000 scale U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps. The red areas show avalanche paths that intersect U.S. Highway 550, County Road 110, and the town of Silverton. On the full map, an index lists the identification and name of each avalanche pathway. The avalanche data is referenced from the Colorado Department of Transportation and Avalanche Information Center’s (CDOT/CAIC) Avalanche Atlas (2001) and the INSTAAR Avalanche Atlas for San Juan and Ouray Counties (1977). Final edits were made by the CDOT/CAIC Avalanche forecasters for the highways in the area.
