The Korea Forest Research Institute created a map showing the status of the types of forests in Wondeok, an area in Samcheok City, South Korea. Much of the forest in the mountain ranges was burned down by a large wildfire in April 2000. Since then, it has been restored after a series of large-scale plantations of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and red pine (Pinus densiflora). To create the maps, detailed on-site fieldwork and interpretation of aerial photos were needed to collect attributes such as tree species, forest type, age class, diameter class, and density. More than 750 forest maps at a scale of 1:25,000 were produced and are updated every five years. The outcome of these forest type maps plays an important role in the decision-making process for forestry policies. In addition, the valuable information on these maps will be made available to the public. Courtesy of Korea Forest Research Institute. |
