Calgary is the third-largest city in Canada and the largest city in the province of Alberta. Calgary’s population reached 1 million people in 2007 and a booming economy has contributed to fast population growth. Experts forecast that by 2075 Calgary will have 1.6 million people, with an average annual growth rate of 2 percent to 4 percent.

Several GIS analyses were conducted by City of Calgary Geomatics to examine current and projected population and employment in the city and surrounding areas. The objective was to determine areas with highest and lowest population and employment, areas of highest and lowest density, and areas of expected highest growth and growth corridors. The City of Calgary and surrounding communities initiated this regional project to support a regional approach in planning.
