Dubai is one of seven emirates that form the federation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is the center of the UAE’s commercial activities. It is one of the world’s fastest growing cities and serves as a gateway between the East and West, connecting diverse and international markets. Tourism has experienced a tremendous growth due to the year-round sunshine, modern infrastructure, ambitious residential development, and new services and facilities including restaurants, retail shops, hotels, and spas. A projected 15 million tourists will travel to Dubai in 2010, contributing to the steadily growing gross domestic product of tourism, which already has surpassed that of oil.

This map was created in the Cartography and Geo-Visualisation program at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC). The objective of the program is to acquire specialized knowledge and skills for geo-information production and handling within any type of organization dealing with spatial data. The final production, design, and publishing of the map was entirely done in the ArcGIS environment.
