This map was created to encourage passengers to switch from private car to public transportation. The need for this map arose from a conventional attitude of Japanese transport operators, in which they typically provide their own route map without mentioning alternative routes of other operators. This map, which remedies the problem, contains three features: 1) bus and railway routes of all transport operators have been summarized in a single map; 2) timetables of buses and trains are given on the map but limited to only peak hours; and 3) bus and railway routes are drawn on a topographical map. Ritsumeikan University hopes that the use of this map and its information will cause a reduction in car commuting and traffic congestion, further resulting in a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
