The 2007 New Mexico Department of Transportation (DOT) Milepost/Point map is an update to the 1995 version showing general route directions and mile postings. The original CADD (computer-aided design and drafting) map lacked sufficient detail to convey the complexity of the system, so an ArcGIS solution was used. New labeling capabilities with the geodatabase has made the map more detailed and easier to update. The label “Milepost/Point” is due to the nature of trying to show the mileposts as well as the mile points on one map. This discussion gets quite intense as there is a difference between the calibrated points and the physical posts on the ground. The Milepost/Point map provides information critical on the two integral linear referencing systems for locating assets or events along the state road system: logged mile point and physical mile post or mile marker. With approximately 300–400 printed copies distributed annually, both internally and externally, this map is second only to the New Mexico DOT State Road Map.
