The nature of peacekeeping mission work (in postconflict and underdeveloped regions) often puts United Nations mission staff in hazardous areas. Military conflict and the associated destruction often rearrange the landscape dramatically, as well as expose those who travel there to specific dangers such as unmarked mine fields. The 1:800,000 scale Côte d’Ivoire Road Map, produced by the GIS Unit of the ONUCI (Opération des Nations Unies pour la Côte d’Ivoire) Engineering Section, was generated to facilitate the movement of military and civilian staff and their requisite logistical supplies. The road distance chart assists map readers in planning their trips around the country. ArcGIS was used for the digitizing and map design. ArcGIS 3D Analyst was used to generate the digital elevation information. The map is updated regularly from remotely sensed images and from field data collected via handheld GPS units by U.N. mission staff.
