Calgary Transit uses 88 GPS-enabled Automatic Passenger Counting (APC) systems on its buses to collect more than 18,000 stop-related details per day. The system uses sensitive infrared counters to determine whether passengers are boarding or alighting. The APC data is then processed and stored in a database and retrieved using a custom-built Web-based desktop reporting system. Created in ArcGIS, this map compares seasonal bus loads with passengers boarding and alighting, along with schedule adherence percent averages derived from APC data. Calgary Transit schedulers and planners used FME to compare the seasonal stop usage as well as seasonal ridership levels between individual stops. This allowed them to identify specific locations of high, low, and average transit usage and highlight routes and/or stops that should be modified. Copyright 2008, The City of Calgary.
