In 2002, the City of Mercer Island embarked on a project to create a Water Atlas with details of valves and fittings in areas that were not easily visible on the standard 1:1,800 scale map. This version had the detail boxes on the same page as the map, which created space limitations. In 2006, the GIS team revisited the project to improve it based on city maintenance staff recommendations. This time, the detail boxes were moved to a separate page allowing more room for each detail box and the incorporation of a dimensioning feature class. During the update process, the GIS team verified distances between features with old hand-drawn maps from the 1970s to improve accuracy. To accommodate the different needs of the maintenance staff, two versions of the atlas were provided. The first version included the map and detail pages bound into one atlas. The second version separated the maps and detail pages into separate binders. At the completion of the project, 28 ArcMap files, 309 ArcMap data frames, and 1,025 new dimension feature classes were created. Copyright City of Mercer Island, Washington, 2007. |
