The Skagit County GIS Department is often asked to produce a general map that shows roads and political boundaries along with contour information. In the past, the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) 7.5-minute topographic maps were useful for this purpose. A previous project re-created the USGS 7.5-minute topographic maps using information that the GIS Department maintains and collects.

This new project took that product and made an 11-by-17-inch map book that could be distributed as an atlas. The maps were rescaled to 1:31,560 (one inch equals a half mile). The scale and size work well in vehicles and at people's desks, and the atlas has been popular with the community for hiking, hunting, and exploring the region. The atlas is printed on a high-quality laser jet printer and is sold for the printing cost.
