This 1:750,000-scale map of the three Darfur states in western Sudan was designed to help plan assistance efforts for the troubled area. It is a compilation of various sources, including Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Terrain Elevation Data (SRTM DTED), satellite imagery, and locally acquired data for roads and settlements.
It was found to be particularly useful in terms of giving planners an appreciation of the variations of terrain experienced throughout the area, ranging from swampy lowlands to plateaus and higher mountains. Each of these geographic features presents particular problems in terms of access and in turn affects population distribution and density, as evidenced by this product. These factors also influence concentrations of internally displaced persons, a large focus of users of this product.
Once strategies were developed based on this information, larger scale, more detailed maps were developed for individual areas.
