These maps are part of an analysis of enrollment shifts in the Portland School District by the Population Research Center at Portland State University. They help explain how the rising number of births to older mothers has reversed the trend of declining school enrollments in several of the district's gentrifying neighborhoods.
Among the information shown on the maps are where the birth rates for older mothers are higher and areas where the density of births to older mothers increased substantially from 2001 to 2005. Maps and charts also show that these older mothers are a highly educated group, identify gentrifying neighborhoods as measured by an increase in the percentage of highly educated persons, and show that the in-migration of these women began in the 1990s.
