Every January, the City of Kirkland produces a series of maps that show the crime trends for the previous year. Six maps are created in total, including burglaries, driving under the influence (DUI) arrests, vehicle prowls, vehicle thefts, traffic collisions, and dispatched calls for service.
The raw data is exported from the dispatch system into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. At this point, the data is formatted and converted to a database file. The addresses are geocoded against the city's address point layer or street centerlines (depending on incident type). Any unmatched addresses are then matched manually.
Using ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, the (kernel) density of the matched addresses is calculated. The density raster is then added to the map to illustrate, with just a quick glance, areas where incidents are happening.
Charts summarizing the data for each patrol district (beat) are then created using Excel so the officers can see what is happening in their district graphically. These charts are imported into ArcGIS and placed in the final map layout.
