These maps represent a spatial analysis of the impacts of residency restrictions on sexual offenders resulting from 2007 state legislation in Maryland. The analysis included areas in Maryland where registered sex offenders would and would not be able to live, the number of sex offenders who would be required to move, and the current residential housing densities (low, medium, high) within and outside of areas that would be restricted to sex offenders.
The radius map shows a 1-mile radius around schools and parks in Maryland, along with the location of sexually violent predators and sexually violent offenders on Maryland's Sex Offender Registry. The 1-mile radii are created from a center point of each location, not from the perimeter of each school campus or park. The off-limits areas for offender residencies will be larger than shown. The parks do not include any state parks, but do include many community and residential parks. The schools include public schools and universities and colleges, but do not include many private schools. It is important to note that off-limit areas for offender residencies will be larger than shown with additional data of school and park locations.
The residential restrictions map shows generalized residential areas in Maryland that are either restricted or not restricted for sex offenders due to legislation. The analysis concluded that 33.4 percent of residential land is not restricted to sex offenders for residency. Of that land, 87 percent is low-density residential, 12 percent is medium-density residential, and 1 percent is high-density residential.
