This map shows directional well surveys and how the engineering/survey data is converted to GIS format for display on a map. A map provides a two- or three-dimensional view of the directional survey, which aids in the geophysical visualization and interpretation that leads to the discovery of new oil and gas reservoirs. A map helps determine the volumetrics to calculate reserves, and a map view of proposed drilling helps avoid intersecting an existing well.

This map of Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, illustrates why directional surveys are important to oil and gas companies. A directional survey is a series of measured depths points down the well path with corresponding hole inclination and direction. From these points, the spatial position of the well path is calculated. The well directional survey information is given to the drilling company and reported to the state or federal regulatory agency and operators.

The survey report becomes part of a proprietary database that is updated regularly. This information then becomes available to clients in various file formats suitable to their requirements. Well directional surveys have not been a highly publicized subject, but this is rapidly changing. Petroleum Place Energy Solutions, Inc. (P2ES) is the leading oil and gas data supplier creating well directional survey data standardized for mapping and three-dimensional interpretation purposes for the United States onshore. P2ES is the industry leader when it comes to “standardizing” for mapping purposes. This dataset is extremely valuable to the industry, because directional surveys (accurate to within plus-or-minus 4 feet) can now be easily mapped in a GIS environment.
