State law directs the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to map areas of significant wildfire hazards. CAL FIRE's Fire and Resource Assessment Program created the map of draft Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ) using data and models describing development patterns, potential fuels over a 30- to 50-year time horizon, expected fire behavior, and expected burn probabilities to quantify the likelihood and nature of vegetation fire exposure (including firebrands) to new construction.
This map provides a generalized validation of the FHSZ model results by comparing the model's zones to fire perimeters from the 2007 and 2003 fire sieges. The draft FHSZs are also being improved through a more exhaustive and detailed validation process involving CAL FIRE field staff, local government, fire protection districts, and the public.
