The City of Palm Desert's zoning map has evolved from a hand-drawn Mylar map, created and updated by a draftsman working in the city's Planning Department, to a digital map. The decision to go digital was made in 1998, and the map has been revised through the years using ARC/INFO 7.x, ArcView GIS 3.x, and now ArcGIS 9.3.

The city sells the 36-by-48-inch map, along with an accompanying street index printout, to the public, and it has been a high-demand item before Planning Commission and City Council meetings. All the data that is shown on the paper map is available digitally on the city's internal Web site using ArcIMS and soon ArcGIS Server.

The City of Palm Desert is located in the center of the Coachella Valley, south of the Joshua Tree National Monument, and about 120 miles east of Los Angeles. With a population of more than 45,000 in a 27-square-mile area, Palm Desert is a thriving year-round community with the natural beauty and recreational amenities of a resort destination.
