The City of High Point bus system consists of fourteen bus routes: twelve weekday routes and two alternate Saturday routes. This series of twelve maps showing individual bus routes, stops, and time point schedules was created with a computer-aided design (CAD) software application. However, updating the maps was tedious because no attribute data was attached to the bus routes and stops.
The City of High Point Department of Transportation had already begun to convert the data to ArcGIS Desktop software. It also updated bus stop locations and attributes using recent aerial orthophotography. Creating new maps for each route was fairly simple. However, combining the routes (many of which overlap) onto one systemwide map proved more challenging without the luxuries of hiring consultants or purchasing extra ArcGIS extensions and graphic softwares.
The rugged solution was to play with line directionality and offsets to show the routes that overlapped. The Maplex labeling engine saved a lot of time by automatically placing and resizing labels on the fly. The new, enhanced maps were well received by the public—so much so that the World Relief Office found them invaluable in the Refugee Care Program, which helps ease refugees' transition into the community by using the transit system to meet their daily needs. The system map was modified for World Relief Office staff to show the various locations of the refugees' homes and their destinations.
The Department of Transportation staff then generated directions for each home address to and from doctors' offices, social service offices, local shopping establishments, and the local World Relief Office. They then trained the refugees and World Relief staff how to use the transit system. The refugees now have greater mobility around their new community, and the World Relief Office has tools to help teach more newcomers how to use the transit system in the future.
