This map shows the patterns of annual average daily traffic throughout Oregon. With just under 9,000 miles of highway and over 20 billion vehicle miles traveled annually, managing these systems is a monumental effort. The Traffic Flow Map is an annual publication that the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) sends out to government agencies, private companies, and the public. Agencies such as the Oregon State Police, marketing firms, real estate companies, engineering firms, and the Tourism Commission all have unique uses for this information and are annual customers of the Traffic Flow Map.
This map has been produced for over fifty years and has evolved along with advancing technologies in cartography. This map was converted to GIS in 2004, and the current version is stored in ODOT's enterprise geodatabase with the cartography being done using ArcGIS software. Traffic volume and classification data is collected by 150 automatic traffic recorders and around 5,000 count sites that use hose tubes draped across the roadway. The data updates are now an automated workflow that can be completed in a few minutes, using Feature Manipulation Engine, whereas the previous versions would take a few weeks or longer.
