Sewer Quad D-01-E

City of Norfolk, Department of Utilities

Click to Enlarge Sewer Quad D-01-E

This is the design for the physical maps located in the City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities buildings. They are used for planning and emergency operations purposes. The map was created using ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 with the Map Book Developer Sample.

The Norfolk Department of Utilities was established on July 1, 1969, and was charged with the operation of the city's water and sewer systems. The department currently provides water for more than 800,000 people in the Hampton Roads area and maintains over 1,600 miles of water and sewer infrastructure. The current hand-drawn/computer-aided design record system is being replaced by GIS data. This process involves the GIS team researching the old record system and combining that information with new information that comes in daily from current infrastructure improvement and repair projects in the city.

Two types of maps were made: planimetrics (or large overview maps) and quads (used for more detailed views). The quad map is shown here. These maps are generally used for customer service purposes, such as locating sewer availability for residents, and also serve as emergency backups to computerized maps. The maps are designed for a 24-by-36-inch sheet, with a scale of 1:600 (1 inch equals 50 feet), and have a 1.5-inch overlap (eliminating those instances with a line appearing on four separate sheets). The maps keep the same detail and information as the old drawings; however, using GIS provides more up-to-date information, simplified updating, modeling capabilities, and the ability to sync maps with work order tracking systems.
