Balboa Insurance Group developed Catastrophe Manager, an award-winning, unique Internet tool for its financial institutions clients that provides year-round geographic monitoring capabilities on natural disasters. Catastrophe Manager gives close to real-time reports to Balboa and its lender clients, often with specific ZIP Code information, to see which properties in their portfolio are affected.
Along with reports during a catastrophic event, the Web site provides Balboa's full-time catastrophe modeling team with powerful tools to help analyze client exposure prior to an actual event as well as help clients make timely, informed portfolio decisions.
Catastrophe Manager also develops preparedness using hypothetical situations. Balboa has conducted an annual earthquake simulation to analyze its readiness to provide prompt and thorough information to lenders. This map highlights the type of information Balboa would be able to provide in the event of a large earthquake. Balboa used the earthquake intensity and location provided by the U.S. Geological Survey to perform the analysis. Accordingly, Balboa simulated the damages from a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Southern California using the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale to determine percentage of damage based on soil type, liquefaction soil, building type, slope, and landslide prone areas.
