This map was created for the green routes regional network prospective survey. It shows the existing and potential green routes over the entire region, from its central built-up area, including Paris municipality, to its vast rural areas.
The green routes network consists of various cycling lanes, hiking trails, greenways, parks, and sometimes regular roads. It was initiated to give people alternative access to forests, parks, and other recreational areas, but it can also support nonmotorized daily commutes.
The network is based on three types of routes: main valleys (blue), radial routes (pink), and circular routes (yellow). The present network needs improving because it is often interrupted by major roads, industrial estates, waterways, port areas, and so forth. The regional council, with its planning tools, aims at coordinating the efforts of local governments and communities involved in the development of the network.
