“Noise Complaint Analysis, 2006–2009” is the result of a new GIS effort at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico to map, analyze, assess, and quantify noise complaints received from surrounding community residents. This GIS analysis started with geocoding noise complaint address locations since 2006 to determine any geographic pattern of the complaint locations and their proximity to surrounding civilian quarries and regional airports.
Additionally, this project analyzes the temporal aspect of these complaints by integrating detailed training records from noise complaint days to see if there was any correlation between complaints and potential noise-producing events taking place on base at that time.
A third component the study considers is the weather conditions on the day of a noise event, as atmospheric conditions can greatly enhance how noise disperses from its source. “Noise Complaint Analysis, 2006–2009” was produced in ArcGIS Desktop 9.2, using the Geocode Addresses function to plot noise complaint locations.
Analysis of noise complaints provides the Public Affairs Office with a five-year quantitative tool it can use to educate community members about the need for continued live-fire training at MCB Quantico.
